Did you know that the water from most storm drains flows directly into streams, rivers, and Narragansett Bay? That means that anything dumped into those drains - such as chemicals, motor oil, and pet waste - pollutes our beautiful Bay. But you can make a difference by participating in our Storm Drain Marking effort! For this project you will glue markers that say "Don't Dump - Drains To Bay" next to storm drains in Providence. We are focusing on the Roger William Park to improve water quality. Best for ages 13+; minors under 16 must participate with parent or legal guardian.
Join us for a dynamic event at Roger Williams Park, where we'll engage in Storm Drain marking event. Teams of 2-3 will receive maplets pinpointing storm drains leading to RWP lakes. Dispersed throughout the park, each team will be placing Save the Bay " Don't dump- Drains to Bay" stickers to storm drains marked on the map. Together, let's improved water quality of the Roger Williams Park lakes!
If weather is not optimal for placing markers such as rain or weather not meeting a low of 40 degrees, then this event will be canceled.
STEP ONE: Meet at Roger William Park Casino in Roger Williams Park, Providence. On the day of event you will receive maplets marking storm drains in Roger Williams Park. We will divide into small teams to cover different areas of the park. Below is a copy of the maplets with coordinates of storm drains for easy finding.
STEP TWO: Start marking! See a demonstration here. Note that this is a very weather dependent project. Night time temperatures must be above 40 degrees and the streets must be dry.
STEP THREE: Report back! You will keep track of how many markers you used, where you placed them, and how much time you spent on the project.
