WHAT: Join Save The Bay and the City of Warwick to plant beach grass at a newly created dune along the shoreline of Brushneck Cove in the Oakland Beach neighborhood of Warwick. Also called American beach grass, this plant can grow in an arid environment, and has a root system that extends up to 3 feet! The grass captures and traps fine wind-blown sand and helps create dunes. The dune restoration is part of a larger project to reduce flooding of low-lying sections of Sea View Drive and Strand Avenue, treat road runoff, and restore dune habitat.
WHEN: Wednesday, April 19, 3-6 PM.
WHERE: Park along the western end of Strand Avenue, Warwick, RI. See MAP for exact location.
PREPARE FOR THE PLANTING:
- Always dress for the weather in sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
- Bring your own water - we recommend a reusable bottle!
- Optional: You may want to bring your own work gloves. Save The Bay will provide trowels and gloves if needed.
Registration notes:
- Pre-registration is required.
- Age requirements: Participants in dune grass planting must be 16+.
