Save The Bay is the Rhode Island coordinator for the International Coastal Cleanup - a global event where volunteers clean up the shores and record what they find on data sheets or on the Clean Swell app. The data we collect is published by the Ocean Conservancy in an annual report on marine debris that is an important tool to advocate for clean oceans.
Leading cleanups with Save The Bay is something anyone can do - we make it easy! We provide both training and supplies, and can arrange permission and trash pickup from the park or town. We are looking for leaders that are reliable, responsible, and willing to adhere to our safety standards.
At this training you will learn the nuts and bolts of how to lead an International Coastal Cleanup event with Save The Bay. We will go over the leader's role, how to set up, how to check people in via our volunteer portal, and how to direct the data collection.
Experienced leaders: Welcome back! This is a great refresher and training on newer procedures such as e-check-in and updated COVID guidelines.
New leaders: once you have completed training, you can sign up to co-lead a cleanup on our schedule, and we can also work with you to plan a cleanup at a location and date of your choosing! (NOTE: currently scheduling new cleanups for October) Cleanups work best when led by two leaders - you can lead with a trained friend or family member, or we will match you up with another leader.
Cleanup leadership is appropriate for volunteers 13+ years old, but any cleanup leaders under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian as a co-leader.
Please note: this training is not eligible for community service hours.
