Join our river herring monitoring project at Shady Lea in North Kingstown!
215 Shady Lea Rd, North Kingstown, RI
At this training you will learn everything you need to know to help us document the return of river herring to this area of the Mattatuxet River after last year's Shady Lea Dam removal project. Trained monitors can then sign up to observe fish in the river for 10 minute intervals in the afternoons or evenings from April 1 to May 20. Commit to at least one count a week, more observations are welcome!
You don't need to be an expert fish identifier, the fish will be distinctive! Information such as air temperature, water temperature, presence of predators, and number of fish seen will be collected on datasheets.
Great opportunity for individuals, families, and responsible high school students. Must be 16+ to volunteer independently.
NOTE: This is a quick 15 minute training! So if you can't get here exactly at 5:30, that's OK, we will go over the process several times.
