WHAT: Join Save The Bay and NBNERR for the International Coastal Cleanup and clean up accumulated trash on Patience Island! Save The Bay's newest vessel, Rosemary Quinn, can be landed directly on beaches. This enables us to clean Bay islands that cannot otherwise be accessed, and transport the trash for disposal. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris. Participants must be 18+, must each sign up individually, and must be comfortable stepping out into shallow water - see PREPARE below.
WHERE: Meet at 8:30 AM at Allens Harbor, 24 Bruce Boyer Rd, North Kingstown, RI 02852. We will depart for Patience Island promptly at 9 AM.
PREPARE:
- The data is what makes ICC special! Download the Clean Swell App so you can be ready to record what your group picks up. Paper data cards will be provided as well.
- Review our ICC QUICK TIPS document for detailed data collection instructions.
- Bring your own water - we recommend a reusable bottle!
- Bring garden or work gloves (disposable gloves available).
- Dress for the weather - remember it is cooler and windier on the water.
- Plan time to shower and change afterward.
- Optional: Save resources by bringing your own trash grabber and bucket for collecting trash.
- SPECIAL NOTE ON FOOTWEAR - PLEASE READ! Volunteers will be stepping off the boat into shallow water, from a few inches to potentially above the knee. In addition, sturdy, closed toe shoes are required during the cleanup, and long pants are recommended. We recommend wearing water shoes or sports sandals to step off the boat, wear pants you can roll up, and bring sturdy shoes and socks to change into on the island.
Registration notes:
- Pre-registration is required.
- Age requirements: This cleanup is open to ages 18+ only.
- If the cleanup is full, join the waitlist! Spaces often open up.
Need documentation of service hours? We provide confirmation letters upon request! Just ask your cleanup leader at the end of the event.
