Save The Bay is joining Friends of the Saugatucket's Great Nip Pickup Challenge! Over 90 days (December 27-March 27), the challenge is to pick up as many littered nip bottles as we can.
Last year, around 20 volunteers collected over 21,000 50ml plastic nips off the streets and out of Rhode Island waterways - all within 90 days. This quantity of nips was instrumental in bringing the nip conversation to the forefront of local and statewide policy.
Starting on December 27 we will start collecting! Once you have a significant number (at least a half a bucket), you can bring them to Save The Bay's office in Providence. Great project for groups and families! Important tips:
- Starting Jan 3, drop off at 100 Save The Bay Drive any time between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday (except holidays).
- We will have a final collection day at the location above on Sunday, March 19 from 9 AM-1 PM - last chance to drop off!
- We will have a one-time drop off on Sunday, March 19 at our Exploration Center & Aquarium, 175 Memorial Blvd, Newport, RI from 10 AM to 2 PM. Drop of your nip collection and get free admission to the Aquarium!
- They must be 50ml and plastic (eg, no slightly larger wine bottles, 100 ml bottles, etc). This way we can recycle them at RIRRC afterward.
- Each plastic nip counts, even if it is flattened or mangled.
- CAUTION: Empty nips are open containers, so be sure to ONLY put them in the trunk of your car when you are transporting them, ideally in a closed bag, bucket, or storage tote.
- Looking for service hours? We will give you a letter when you drop off your collection.
- IMPORTANT: Please do not drop off nips at our office when we are not there, as that will encourage dumping and littering. Contact me if you have any question about our hours.
