WHAT: Help keep Narragansett Bay clean with Save The Bay! Shoreline trash is ugly and harmful to wildlife, and cleanups are a great way to make a difference. We provide trash bags, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and insect repellant - you bring the helping hands!

WHERE: Salter Grove Park. Use 461 Narragansett Parkway, Warwick as an approximate GPS address for beach location. Please keep an eye out for a small sign on Narragansett Parkway for George B Salter Grove. NOTE: Parking lot is very small! Please park in the neighborhood streets across Narragansett Parkway if you can, to leave room for families with children to use the park.

WHERE: Park at Crescent Park, and meet at the gazebo. We will proceed to the beach access area at the opposite end of the park at the end of Beach Rd (so if you arrive late, look for us there!) NOTE: There is no precise address for this site. You can enter Crescent Park in your GPS, or use 700 Bullocks Point Ave, Riverside, RI 02915 (the carousel) and then look for the park on the OPPOSITE side of Bullocks Point Ave.

WHERE: 100 Save The Bay Drive, Providence, RI. The entrance to Save The Bay is through the Johnson & Wales Harborside Campus, via the main entrance at Harborside Blvd. Waze works best to get you here! Google Maps and other systems may take you down a gated road (Shipyard St) that you cannot access without a key card. If you use another system, just ignore any directions to turn from Allens Ave onto Ernest St, and continue along Allens until you get to Harborside Blvd. See map for exact location.

Summary: Are you interested in putting your science and ecology education to work doing hands-on ecological restoration? Save the Bay Habitat Restoration Interns gain experience in participating in salt marsh restoration projects, conducting restoration monitoring and data analysis, and planning associated with the restoration of coastal habitats in Narragansett Bay and the salt ponds. Interns who are residents of or strongly familiar with the South Coast community are preferred.

Location: Save The Bay Center in Providence, RI and South Coast Center in Westerly, RI

Time Commitment: 10-15 hours/week.

Water quality monitoring occurs every other week ~7:30am-4:30pm; exact dates TBD.Must be able to drive samples to URI Coastal Institute in Kingston, RI, for 3:30 pm delivery time.Occasional weekend work may be necessary for special events. Interns must be available on Saturday, August 8 for the Save The Bay Swim.

Transportation: South Coast Waterkeeper interns must have access to their own reliable transportation (i.e. car) between Westerly (both the South Coast Center & Viking Marina) and URI Main Campus in Kingston (for sample drop off). Some travel reimbursement is available on a case-by-case basis.

Education: undergraduate sophomores, juniors, seniors, recent graduates, grad students, and beginning professionals working towards or having obtained a BA/BS or higher degree in biology, education, marine studies, marine affairs, or related fieldsExperience in marine and environmental sciences A passion for nonprofit work and the environmentWillingness to learn, positive attitude, and ability to work independently and as a teamAbility to do physical, outdoor work; capable of spending up to 4 hours on a small boat, leaning over the edge to put instruments in and out of the water, and working a variety of weather conditions (e.g. light rain and wind). Summary: Do you love both administrative work and aquarium maintenance? At Save The Bay, you’ll be part of a hardworking behind-the-scenes administrative team helping ensure our summer Bay Camps are set up for success. As much as we love a good spreadsheet, we also love the marine animals that temporarily stay in our care. Interns gain hands-on experience with aquarium maintenance, monitoring animal behavior, and supporting the care and feeding of our animals. This internship is perfect for someone who can combine strong administrative skills with a love for caring for aquarium tanks and marine life!

Every year, Save The Bay organizes about 200 shoreline cleanups, removing tens of thousands of pounds of trash and engaging almost 2000 volunteers - and it would not be possible without our cleanup leader volunteers! We are looking for volunteers who are reliable, communicative, eager to lead, willing to learn and follow Save The Bay’s procedures for cleanups, and able to participate frequently.

Cleanups are usually led by a team of 2-3 leaders, with one "beach captain" acting as the main leader for the event (assigning leadership tasks and giving the welcome speech). Leadership tasks include welcoming and checking volunteers in, collecting waivers, distributing supplies, giving instructions, leading volunteers to different shoreline areas, weighing the trash, and thanking everyone at the end. To become a cleanup leader,

Recommended: participate in a shoreline cleanup as a volunteer first!Fill out the application to train as a cleanup leader. Interview with our Volunteer & Internship Manager (15min)"Audition" as an assistant leader at a cleanup (we will provide training materials)If you are a good fit, you are on the team! We'll ask you to assist with leadership at an additional 3 cleanups in the next 2 months to complete your training.OPTIONAL: After 4 total cleanups, you are eligible to become a Beach Captain (main leader of cleanup) if you choose; Beach Captains will be observed leading and take a quiz to be cleared. Once approved, you can be the beach captain at any cleanup and can also work with Save The Bay to plan and schedule cleanups at your favorite sites! Not comfortable being the Beach Captain? That's OK, you don't have to be!

Cleanup leadership is recommended for ages 16+. All leaders who are minors must co-lead with an adult. Motivated leaders under 16 may be accepted into the program, but must be trained alongside a parent or legal guardian who can lead with them. Please note: this training is not eligible for community service hours.

WHERE: Salter Grove Park. Use 461 Narragansett Parkway, Warwick as an approximate GPS address for beach location. Please keep an eye out for a small sign on Narragansett Parkway for George B Salter Grove. NOTE: Parking lot is very small! Please park in the neighborhood streets across Narragansett Parkway if you can, to leave room for families with children to use the park.

WHERE: 100 Save The Bay Drive, Providence, RI. The entrance to Save The Bay is through the Johnson & Wales Harborside Campus, via the main entrance at Harborside Blvd. Waze works best to get you here! Google Maps and other systems may take you down a gated road (Shipyard St) that you cannot access without a key card. If you use another system, just ignore any directions to turn from Allens Ave onto Ernest St, and continue along Allens until you get to Harborside Blvd. See map for exact location.

WHAT: Help keep Narragansett Bay clean with Save The Bay! Shoreline trash is ugly and harmful to wildlife, and cleanups are a great way to make a difference. We provide trash bags, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and insect repellant - you bring the helping hands!

WHERE: Nanaquaket Bridge Waterfront Public Access Point. Use 58 Nanaquaket Rd, Tiverton, RI as an approximate address for GPS and keep an eye out for the fishing access area at the west end of the bridge. See map for exact location. NOTE: parking is limited, please carpool if you can!

WHERE: 100 Save The Bay Drive, Providence, RI. The entrance to Save The Bay is through the Johnson & Wales Harborside Campus, via the main entrance at Harborside Blvd. Waze works best to get you here! Google Maps and other systems may take you down a gated road (Shipyard St) that you cannot access without a key card. If you use another system, just ignore any directions to turn from Allens Ave onto Ernest St, and continue along Allens until you get to Harborside Blvd. See map for exact location.

As a member of Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium aquarist team, aquarist volunteers are responsible for assisting with the care and maintenance of our collection of live animals 100% sourced in Rhode Island waters. You will have the opportunity to assist with our nursery, breeding, conservation, and rescue programs based out of our aquarium. Volunteers provide assistance in the maintenance and cleaning of the exhibits, life support systems, and the care and feeding of animals. See a quick tour of our Aquarium here!

Time Commitment: 2 full-day shifts (9:30am-4:30pm) per week for a period of 4 months.

Cohorts run from February-May, June-September, and October-January. We can accommodate semester length schedules for students.We occasionally have openings for half-day morning shifts (9:30am-1pm), also 1x/week for a period of 4 months. These special opportunities will be listed here if available: there are no half-day opportunities at this time.

Role & Responsibilities

General marine and freshwater animal care of species local to the Narragansett Bay and surrounding watershed, including day to day animal care, handling, moving animals from tank to tank, receiving new animals Animal husbandry, including preparing diets, cleaning tanks, removing animal waste Life support system maintenance, including washing filters, protein skimmers, water changesAssist with cleaning all quarantine and life support areas: cleaning nets, foot baths, floorsCare and management of exhibits: scrubbing tanks, water chemistry monitoring, aquascapingOrganism collection and release in Narragansett BayAdditional responsibilities are assigned as volunteer masters given tasks

The Clean Swell App is a great way to clean up your favorite spots and track what you've accomplished! Download the app and then start cleaning up and recording what you pick up. All the data goes to the Ocean Conservancy for their research on marine debris and their International Coastal Cleanup report. The app will track your progress and you will earn badges to reward your achievements! This is great for those who want to do cleanups on their daily walks, at small access areas, or whenever they feel inspired. For more information and to download the app, visit:

You do not need to hit "respond" to this need - just download the app and start cleaning up!

A few guidelines: 

Always use gloves when picking up trash. Use common sense - beware of sharp items, ticks, poison ivy, and don't lift anything too heavy.  Never fill up trash barrels so others can't use them, or leave bags of trash to be picked up without arranging it with the town or park manager. Be prepared to take it home with you! This posting is geared toward individual and small group cleanups. Larger groups must be permitted through the town or park.

 

 

Help Save The Bay document shoreline flooding and coastal conditions with MyCoast!

MyCoast is a portal for collecting and analyzing photos and data about coastal flooding during king (moon) tides and after storms. This information helps us visualize the impact of flooding from sea level rise, and helps enhance awareness among decision-makers and stakeholders. Learn more about this issue here.

To participate, simply download the app by going to the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) on your smartphone. Once you register, you will receive emails when king tides or coastal storms are expected. You can take photos and document flooding in your area right from your phone.​ Check out this how-to video!
