This volunteer team will direct cars in the parking lot of the Newport Grand Casino. Promptness is especially needed in this role. Volunteers with military clearance are especially helpful here, as they can assist with checking people onto the shuttles that travel to the Swim start area on the Navy Base. This is an important team that is essential to the smooth functioning of the Swim!

Volunteers will be paired up with a partner to check kayaks for required length and appropriate equipment, such as life jackets, whistles, paddle & leash, blankets or towels. Inspectors will receive instructions and a checklist, no experience needed! See this video for an overview of the process. All volunteers will assist with loading swimmer belongings on to the van to the finish line after the swim begins.

Volunteers will park at the Newport Grand Casino, 150 Admiral Kalbfus Road, Newport, at 5:25 AM and take the first shuttle into the base. Naval security is strict. On Swim Day, you must follow these instructions:

Park at the Newport Grand Casino Bring your LICENSE to the table with Navy Security near the Shuttles. The Navy staff will check your ID against the master list of ALL SWIMMERS, KAYAKERS, VOLUNTEERS, and SPECTATORS. The Navy staff will stamp/mark your hand to confirm your ID. Return to your car to drop off your ID and gather any belongings. Enter the shuttle to travel to the Navy Base.NOTE: To ensure access to the base, your name in the volunteer portal needs to match your ID exactly! If it does not, please edit your profile, or make a note when you respond to this need so we can update it.

This team of volunteers will remove kayaks from cars and carry them to the kayak inspection area. This can be fast-paced during the rush. Some volunteers will work in pairs to carry the kayaks - so if you don't know how to unfasten a kayak or can't reach high enough, that's OK! All volunteers will assist with loading swimmer belongings on to the van to the finish line after the swim begins.

The Save The Bay Safety Vessel team is a group of trained and experienced boat captains that use their boats to line the passage that our Swimmers will cross. Safety vessels' duty is to watch for:
1. Swimmers or Kayakers in obvious need of assistance.
2. Kayakers signaling by waving paddles or sounding whistles.
3. Swimmers who are well North or South of the course
4. Vessels breaking through the Safety Zone 

Safety Vessels will report any issues to Save The Bay staff according to our safety protocol, which will be provided and gone over in a training session held before the event.

Boats must meet the following qualifications:

Boat size: 18 - 50-foot (Inflatables can be 14-foot) Boat must be easy to maneuver Boat needs to have the capacity to easily retrieve a swimmer from the water with tools such as a good swim platform, a low railing to bring someone up or a swim ladder so it's easy to get in and out.

Required:

Attend a Zoom information and training session in advance of the event; date and time TBA. (the training will be recorded for anyone who can't make the event)Must have at least one additional crew member on board. If not, Save The Bay has limited staff to crew if neededSafety Squad members must complete the Swim waiver volunteer qualification in the volunteer portal upon registering.

Safety Squad members must have an emergency contact who is not a swimmer, kayaker, or safety squad member. Please indicate your emergency contact (name and phone number) in the notes when you register, OR edit your profile to add it yourself.

We recommend that you park by 8:00 AM and be ready to be at the Kayak Check-Out Tent no later than 8:30 AM.

This team will start and end later than other roles. Volunteers will be in and out of the water (knee to thigh high), collecting athlete pinnies from all of the kayakers that come in off the water from the event and taking them to the check out table for our staff to mark off that the kayaker has made it to land safely. This team will also give Participant Shirts to the kayakers upon check-out and assist kayakers with moving their kayaks back to their cars.

Seeking medical professionals such as EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and doctors to staff our first aid tent at the finish line at Potter Cove in Jamestown. Only light duty first aid will be offered - such as bandaids, mylar blankets, and treatment for jellyfish stings. A rescue truck with EMTs will be near the beach for any additional medical needs.

When you register, please add details about your medical training in the notes.

The Save The Bay Safety Paddlers is a group of experienced kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders who act as an additional safety layer around swimmers and kayakers along the 2-mile course from the Newport Naval Station to Potter Cove in Jamestown. Stand up paddleboards will be stationed at Potter Cove and Taylor Point, while kayakers will spread out along the entire course. Safety Squad members watch for swimmers who may need assistance and serve as extra eyes on the water. Check-in and orientation for the Safety Paddlers will be on the Jamestown beach. Detailed instructions and protocol will be provided in advance and gone over in detail at our training session. Requirements:

Must be a very experienced and seasoned kayaker or stand-up paddleboarder. Must provide your own kayak/board and safety equipment (flotation, etc.). Attend a Zoom information and training session in advance of the event, date and time TBA. (the training will be recorded for anyone who can't make the event)

Safety Paddler members must have an emergency contact who is not a swimmer, kayaker, or safety squad member. Please indicate your emergency contact (name and phone number) in the notes when you register, OR edit your profile to add it yourself.

Paddle float and pump (if there is a cockpit) Spray skirt (if there is a cockpit) Paddle leash (or other means of attaching paddle) Water Bottles

This team will provide drinks and snacks for swimmers who have completed their journey, and also give them their towels and t-shirts.

This team assists and cheers on our swimmers after they cross the finish line! Volunteers can expect to be at least thigh - deep in the water, offering a hand to any swimmer who needs it as they walk up the beach to receive their medal.  They will also guard the finish line area to prevent spectators from unintentionally interfering with the swimmers’ check in. YOU MUST WEAR WATER SHOES for this role - no flip flops! Open to ages 13+. Ages 13-15 must volunteer accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 

All Jamestown volunteers will also help with beach setup and breakdown.

This volunteer team will guide cars parking in the Taylor Point Boat Yard at 260 Conanicus Ave, Jamestown. This is an important team that is essential to the smooth functioning of the Swim!

This team is for people who are ready to go deep! Positioned in and around the finish line in the water, these volunteers will funnel swimmers toward the finish line and be ready to assist any swimmer who might need a little help. You will be waist to chest deep in water and may wear a wetsuit, bathing suit, or shorts. YOU MUST WEAR WATER SHOES for this role - no flip flops!

Although not required, this may be an especially good role for you if:

You have a wetsuit  You have lifeguard training You are tall You are a strong swimmer

This team will be stationed in the Party Tent area but assisting anywhere needed on the Jamestown side. Set up pop up tents, tables, and chairs; manage trash and recycling; move ice and water to the finish line; assist with directing people to shuttles, and with breakdown of the party tent area. Volunteers for this role may park at the RIBTA parking lot, 1 East Shore Rd, Jamestown, instead of the main volunteer parking area. You will use the entrance across from Freebody Drive instead of the main entrance - see map pin for exact location. This will be a longer role than most. (5:45 AM - 11:45 AM)
