Volunteer: Graphic Design & Communications Internship - Summer 2026

Summary: Are you a creative-minded individual looking for real-world graphic design experience? Do you like developing and producing clear and engaging visual design? Save The Bay is seeking motivated interns to help support the development and production of clear and engaging print and digital materials for Save The Bay’s marketing and communications outreach. This is a flexible internship for students and graduates majoring, or with significant coursework, in marketing, and with skills in graphic design, social media, and writing.

Location: Work will primarily take place in-person at the Bay Center in Providence, but interns may also travel to our Aquarium in Newport or go out on our educational vessels.

Time Commitment: Approximately May-August, 10-12 hours/week. Internship primarily takes place on weekdays. 1-2 days on-site between 10am-3pm at our Providence office is required. Occasional evenings/weekends required for special events. Interns must be available for the Save The Bay Swim on Saturday, August 8.

What we require:

College student, recent graduate, grad student, or beginning professional working towards or having received a degree in some aspect of the communications field (marketing, public relations, writing/journalism, media, graphic/Web design, etc.)Hard-working, self-motivated, proactive person with a creative eye and passion for their workAble to work well in a busy environment, either individually or as part of a teamAble to work independently in partnership with the Communications teamAbility to think creativelyComfortable speaking to groups and making contact with the general public on Save The Bay’s behalfMust be proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud and CanvaMust have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the graphic design field General office skills including proficiency with G-Suite and Microsoft WordPersonal vehicle for transportation to offsite locations

WHAT: Join the International Coastal Cleanup with Save The Bay! Shoreline trash is ugly and dangerous to wildlife, and shoreline cleanups are a great way for volunteers to make a difference. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris.

WHERE: Park at Crescent Park, Bullocks Point Ave, Riverside, RI and meet at the gazebo. After we give instructions and hand out supplies, we will proceed to the beach access area at the opposite end of the park at the end of Beach Rd - so if you arrive late, look for us there!

Volunteer: International Coastal Cleanup - Compass Rose & Quonset Beaches

WHAT: Join the International Coastal Cleanup with Save The Bay and the Land Conservancy of North Kingstown! Shoreline trash is ugly and dangerous to wildlife, and shoreline cleanups are a great way for volunteers to make a difference. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris.

WHERE: For this cleanup, we will meet at Compass Rose Beach and also fan out to clean nearby Blue Beach and Spink Neck Beach. WHAT: Join Save The Bay and NBNERR for the International Coastal Cleanup and clean up accumulated trash on Patience Island! Save The Bay's newest vessel, Rosemary Quinn, can be landed directly on beaches. This enables us to clean Bay islands that cannot otherwise be accessed, and transport the trash for disposal. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris.

Participants must be 18+ OR 16+ and volunteering with a parent. Each volunteer must sign up individually. Volunteers must be comfortable stepping out into shallow water - see PREPARE below.

WHERE: Meet at 8:30 AM at Allens Harbor, 24 Bruce Boyer Rd, North Kingstown, RI 02852. We will depart for Patience Island promptly at 9 AM.

PREPARE:

Volunteers will be stepping off the boat into shallow water, from a few inches to potentially above the knee. In addition, sturdy, closed toe shoes are required during the cleanup, and long pants are recommended. We recommend wearing water shoes or sports sandals to step off the boat, wear pants you can roll up, and bring sturdy shoes and socks to change into on the island.

Volunteer for the Newport Marathon! Join us at the 16th annual Amica Newport Marathon on Sunday, October 11, 2026. With 13.1 and 26.2 miles of unrivaled oceanfront running, this award-winning fall classic, which supports local charities, is not to be missed! Save The Bay will receive a donation for supporting this event.

WHAT: Save The Bay volunteers will work with staff to provide water to marathon participants at the Purgatory Chasm water station. The water station will have 4 tables set up with jugs of water, igloos of Nuun, cups, and pitchers. The volunteers will fill the cups and help distribute to participants as they go by.

WHEN: Sunday, October 11 from 7:45-11am or 10:45am-2pm. Feel free to register for both shifts!

WHERE: Purgatory Chasm water station (at about 699 Tuckerman Ave, Middletown). Parking for the Chasm is at 632 Tuckerman Ave, Middletown, RI. Parking along the side of the road, off the road is also permitted for this.

AGE: This opportunity is set to 16+. Under 16 may only participate with a parent or legal guardian. If you are interested in participating with your children, please add that in the notes when you register.

WHAT: Join Save The Bay and NBNERR for the International Coastal Cleanup and clean up accumulated trash on Prudence Island! Save The Bay's newest vessel, Rosemary Quinn, can be landed directly on beaches. This enables us to clean beaches that cannot otherwise be accessed, and transport the trash for disposal. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris.

Participants must be 18+ OR 16+ and volunteering with a parent. Each volunteer must sign up individually. Volunteers must be comfortable stepping out into shallow water - see PREPARE below.

Volunteer: International Coastal Cleanup - Fort Wetherill Cleanup with ORCA

WHAT: Save The Bay is joining forces with ORCA for the International Coastal Cleanup at Fort Wetherill! Shoreline trash is ugly and dangerous to wildlife, and shoreline cleanups are a great way for volunteers to make a difference. We will divide into small teams to pick up trash and record what we find. The data will be included in the Ocean Conservancy's annual report on marine debris.

WHERE: 3 Fort Wetherill Rd, Jamestown, RI 02835. This address will get you to the park entrance. NOTE: Fort Wetherill is a huge park! In order to clean the whole shoreline, ORCA will be stationed at the first parking area; Save The Bay will be stationed at the RI Marine Fisheries building at the end of the park road. Continue along Fort Wetherill Rd, ignoring turn offs, until you get to the end of the road. See map for exact meeting site.

Volunteer: Cleanup Leader Program

Every year, Save The Bay organizes about 200 shoreline cleanups, removing tens of thousands of pounds of trash and engaging over 2000 volunteers - and it would not be possible without our cleanup leader volunteers! We are looking for volunteers who are reliable, communicative, eager to lead, willing to learn and follow Save The Bay’s procedures for cleanups, and able to participate frequently.

Cleanups are usually led by a team of 2-3 leaders, with one "beach captain" acting as the main leader for the event (assigning leadership tasks and giving the welcome speech). Leadership tasks include welcoming and checking volunteers in, collecting waivers, distributing supplies, giving instructions, leading volunteers to different shoreline areas, weighing the trash, and thanking everyone at the end. To become a cleanup leader:

Recommended: participate in a shoreline cleanup as a volunteer first!Fill out the application to train as a cleanup leader. Interview with our Volunteer & Internship Manager (15min)"Audition" as an assistant leader at a cleanup (we will provide training materials)If you are a good fit, you are on the team! We'll ask you to assist with leadership at an additional 3 cleanups in the next 2 months to complete your training.OPTIONAL: After 4 total cleanups, you are eligible to become a Beach Captain (main leader of cleanup) if you choose; Beach Captains will be observed leading and take a quiz to be cleared. Once approved, you can be the beach captain at any cleanup and can also work with Save The Bay to plan and schedule cleanups at your favorite sites! Not comfortable being the Beach Captain? That's OK, you don't have to be!

Cleanup leadership is recommended for ages 16+. All leaders who are minors must co-lead with an adult. Motivated leaders under 16 may be accepted into the program, but must be trained alongside a parent or legal guardian who can lead with them. Please note: this opportunity is not eligible for community service hours.

As a member of Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium aquarist team, aquarist volunteers/interns are responsible for assisting with the care and maintenance of our collection of live animals 100% sourced in Rhode Island waters. You will have the opportunity to assist with our nursery, breeding, conservation, and rescue programs based out of our aquarium. Volunteers/interns provide assistance in the maintenance and cleaning of the exhibits, life support systems, and the care and feeding of animals. See a quick tour of our Aquarium here!

Time Commitment: 2 full-day shifts (9:30am-4:30pm) per week for a period of 4 months.

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Donate your time and talents to help document Save The Bay’s biggest summer fundraising events - Taste of the Bay and The Swim! These events are important moments for Save The Bay each year, and the photos captured help us not only recap the events, but also promote future programs, fundraising efforts, and community engagement. We’re looking for volunteers who are comfortable using their own camera equipment and photographing live events in a candid, professional, and energetic way. Did you know that the water from most storm drains flows directly into streams, ponds, and the ocean beyond? That means that anything dumped into those drains - such as chemicals, motor oil, and pet waste - pollutes our local waters. But you can make a difference by participating in our Storm Drain Marking effort! For this project you will glue markers that say "Don't Dump - Drains To Coast" next to storm drains in Narragansett. This is a flexible, ongoing project that may be done by individuals, families or teams. Best for ages 13+; minors under 16 must participate with parent or legal guardian.

STEP ONE: Register your interest here! We will email you our tracking spreadsheet where you can claim areas to mark, and give you options for picking up supplies.

STEP TWO: Review all the materials so you know what to do! It's simple but there are a few important procedures to follow, such as safety tips and how to record and report which streets you marked.

STEP THREE: Pick up supplies and start marking! See a demonstration here. Note that this is a very weather dependent project. Night time temperatures must be above 40 degrees and the streets must be dry. Therefore it is better to plan a flexible, ongoing effort rather than one big project day.

The Clean Swell App is a great way to clean up your favorite spots and track what you've accomplished! Download the app and then start cleaning up and recording what you pick up. All the data goes to the Ocean Conservancy for their research on marine debris and their International Coastal Cleanup report. The app will track your progress and you will earn badges to reward your achievements! This is great for those who want to do cleanups on their daily walks, at small access areas, or whenever they feel inspired. For more information and to download the app, visit:

A few guidelines:

Always use gloves when picking up trash. Use common sense - beware of sharp items, ticks, poison ivy, and don't lift anything too heavy. Never fill up trash barrels so others can't use them, or leave bags of trash to be picked up without arranging it with the town or park manager. Be prepared to take it home with you! This posting is geared toward individual and small group cleanups. Larger groups must be permitted through the town or park.

Help Save The Bay document shoreline flooding and coastal conditions with MyCoast!

MyCoast is a portal for collecting and analyzing photos and data about coastal flooding during king (moon) tides and after storms. This information helps us visualize the impact of flooding from sea level rise, and helps enhance awareness among decision-makers and stakeholders. Learn more about this issue here.

To participate, simply download the app by going to the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) on your smartphone. Once you register, you will receive emails when king tides or coastal storms are expected. You can take photos and document flooding in your area right from your phone. Check out this how-to video!
